Tammy
future homeowner

Tammy is a mother to four grown sons and a grandmother to thirteen. She treasures the time she spends with her loved ones—especially with her nine-year-old grandson, who she’s been raising since his infancy. Tammy’s grandson keeps her busy, whether they’re playing outside, building Lego creations, or watching movies together.

A former claims adjuster of 35 years, Tammy was able to provide for her sons growing up, but health concerns ultimately led her to retire. Now on a fixed income, paying rent has left her cost-burdened. “Our rent is more than 40 percent of my monthly income and rising each year. Often we are scrimping to buy groceries, especially with the rise in my healthcare costs.”

Tammy has rented her entire life, including 12 years in one home that provided stability for her younger sons to focus on school and sports, eventually earning them college opportunities. After the owner sold the home, however, Tammy and her grandson had to move frequently, seeking affordable and safe options. They have since lived in three apartments but keep moving due to rent increases and safety concerns.

Tammy also faces health challenges, which have made finding accessible housing—like a ranch-style home—crucial. On oxygen and managing limited mobility, she dreams of a place where her grandson can thrive without feeling responsible for her care. She says, “I want him to be a child, not to carry my burdens.”

When a close friend suggested Habitat for Humanity as a possibility, Tammy’s path took a hopeful new turn. With her friend’s help, Tammy applied to the Habitat homeownership program, and together, they imagined what a stable home could mean for her and her grandson’s future.

When Tammy learned she was accepted into Habitat’s homeownership program, she was ecstatic. “I danced as best I could around the house and told everyone I knew!” she laughs. “It’s beyond a dream come true—it’s a blessing.”

With an affordable mortgage, Tammy looks forward to enjoying more simple pleasures, like enrolling her grandson in sports and making memories in a stable home. She’s also excited to get started on her 300 sweat equity hours.
