Our History

When Millard and Linda Fuller founded Habitat for Humanity in 1976, they did so with the conviction that working to eliminate poverty housing was one way to show God’s love to people in need. Since that time, Habitat for Humanity International has helped to build or repair more than 800,000 houses and served more than 4 million people around the world.

Habitat for Humanity is now the sixth largest homebuilder in the United States!

Our affiliate in Delaware County, OH was formed in 1989 with leadership from Ohio Wesleyan University.  Twenty five years later, through the generosity and support of this community, we have partnered with 64 local families to help them out of sub-standard housing and into home ownership.

We are also committed to serving families globally through our tithe to Habitat for Humanity International.  Since 1989, we have tithed over $127,000 and served 35 families in countries such as Guatemala, Armenia and El Salvador.  We are currently tithing $4,500 internationally for every home that we build in Delaware & Union Counties.

In July of 2016, Delaware and Union Counties merged and became one.

We have homes throughout Union and Delaware Counties, including Ostrander, Ashley and Kilbourne. Our homes are sold to qualified future homeowners at fair market value with zero-interest mortgages.  To see a map of our current focus neighborhood please click on the image below:

We consider all the homes that we have built to be anchors of home ownership that are strengthening our community.  Communities with higher rates of home ownership are stronger, safer and have higher rates of wealth accumulation. With each family that we transition from substandard housing into home ownership we are making a lasting impact on that family’s long-term future.  Home ownership effects the health, happiness and financial stability of families.  Children of homeowners do better in school, have higher self-esteem and are 59% more likely to become homeowners themselves as adults.  We have moved 95 local children into home ownership situations since 1989.

In an effort to serve more families we have expanded our housing ministry to include a home repair program for low-income homeowners in Delaware & Union Counties as well. Known as our Home Preservation Program, we offer exterior home repairs such as porch repair, painting, landscaping, siding and trim repair and the construction of wheelchair accessible ramps.
