Habitat welcomes Lori and her son into our Homeownership Program!
Lori, along with her husband and son, has lived in the same apartment for 13 years. Lori lost her husband to cancer in 2018 and the apartment is no longer affordable. "He was our main provider because our son has autism and I home-school him. He was a proud Marine and did everything he could for us.”
Lori's biggest hope in applying to Habitat was to stay in Delaware. "I don't want to have to leave the community that my son has grown up in and where he has such amazing access to so many therapies that have helped him immensely over the years.” She also provides in-home childcare so that she is able to be there for her son, making it important to stay nearby. "I just love watching the children I care for grow and learn,” Lori explained.
When she learned that she was accepted into the homeownership program, she was in excited disbelief. "It is such an honor to be accepted, and a relief to know that we will make it. It means everything to us. I feel my husband watching over us through this process knowing we will be in a safe, affordable, and loving home. He wanted to know, until the very end, that we would be okay. I feel this honors his last wishes.”
Lori and her son are excited to have a space that they can be proud to call home. "This will be our forever home. I look forward to having a yard to garden in and for my son to play in. It will be so wonderful to have a haven in the chaos of life.”
As part of the homeownership program, Lori is working through her 300 hours of sweat equity, including volunteering on build sites, taking homeownership classes, and helping in the Habitat ReStore.
We need your support to help Lori realize her dream of affordable homeownership. We hope to break ground with Lori and her son in 2020.
Join us by making a financial contribution or volunteering alongside her on the job site.
Together, we can build strong foundations...one home at a time.
