Mary Ehm

Habitat for Humanity of Delaware & Union Counties is excited to welcome Mary Ehm to our homeownership program!

Mary Ehm is a single woman living in a 1-bedroom apartment in Delaware County. Mary was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and went through treatments and recoveries that has left her with some medical issues making it difficult to return to work. As a result, Mary is on a fixed disability income and is being overwhelmed with rising monthly household costs.

Mary moved to Ohio in 2003 to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Prior to her diagnosis in 2012, she worked in various accounting positions for over 16 years. “Becoming a Habitat homeowner would better my life by allowing me to purchase a home and be able to build equity instead of throwing money away on rent.”

Mary is very much looking forward to having steady monthly payments and easing her anxiety of the rising household costs. “Asking for help is never easy but Habitat allows people to ask for an opportunity to improve their own lives, while retaining dignity and self-respect!” Mary is a member of William Street United Methodist Church and enjoys volunteering with their ministries. Friends from her congregation are eager and looking forward to helping her on her path to homeownership.

Accepted into the program in September 2016, Mary has immediately begun working towards her 300 hours of sweat equity required of the Habitat program. Mary learned about Habitat from her daughter who has volunteered for Habitat previously, but was eager to apply once she attended a meeting at her church where a Habitat staff member held an informational meeting.

“What a wonderful feeling it is to know there are organizations like Habitat and all of the volunteers to help people feel whole again.” Mary is very thankful for the opportunity to feel stable and secure about her future again, something she hasn’t been able to feel since her debilitating diagnosis.
